Sin - Introduction

Sin: alluring, deceptive, tragic

"Sin" is a word that has all but disappeared from common English usage. I remember how in my childhood years people would say, "That's a sin!" when someone said or did something that was improper or mischievous or vulgar. I have not heard that expression for many years. In fact, outside of the realm of religion the word is probably unknown today, and therefore not understood, or misunderstood, by the majority of people. However, as it is a key concept within Christianity it is vital that we understand not only what the word means but also what effect it has upon us all.

The image of a beautiful young woman in a mask illustrates some of the chief features of sin, namely:

  • It is attractive, alluring, drawing us into its web
  • It is deceptive, hiding its true character behind a mask
  • It is ultimately an agent of sorrow, misery, and despair
